Indian Apparel Exports to the EU Register Strong Export Growth in 2009
Other South Asian Suppliers too Post Positive Export Growth

Amongst India’s largest trading partners, EU is the lone market-bloc, to which its exports of apparel have been showing positive export growth. Indian apparel exports, which were to the tune of € 3.90 bn in Jan-Dec’08, could touch a figure of € 4.10 bn in Jan-Dec’09.

Indian Apparel Exports to the EU Clock 0.82 % Growth in Jan-Sep'08

Indian apparel exports have slowed down, according to latest import data released by the EU authorities. The apparel exports at the end of September in the current calendar are up 0.82 % only, which clearly shows that how badly this industry in India is placed today. The trade and industry is confronted with the impact of global financial crisis coupled with weak demand in major markets such as the US and the EU; rising prices of cotton; rising costs of credit; etc. According to reports, the industry has cut capacities and laid off workers.

The second largest apparel supplier from within South Asia, India, during the period, could not make much impact, as its export, in value terms, posted only 0.81 % increase, despite having registered 2.61 % growth in volume terms. Indian apparel exports, which were to the tune of € 2.50 bn in Jan-Jul’07, could touch a figure of € 2.52 bn in Jan-Jul’08.

During Jan-Dec’07, Indian apparel exports to the EU recorded just 0.74 % from € 3.81 bn to € 3.83 bn, despite having posted a growth of 5.55 % in volume terms from 226.58 mn kg to 239.17 mn kg. While India’s knitted apparel exports during the period increased 5.85 % from € 1.80 bn to € 1.90 bn, exports of woven apparel were down 3.85 % to € 1.93 bn from € 2 bn.
